Lockdowns are a nuclear bomb for public health. They rob people of their wellbeing and quality of life; in other words, their health. Without adequate freedom, wellbeing, and opportunities for the fulfillment of personality, there is limited value in having a long life. Radical social distancing measures, whether imposed or voluntary, take years off the life expectancy of every person affected. Coronavirus shortens the lives of approximately 0.15% of infected individuals, each by about 3 years — not even enough to affect a country’s overall life expectancy, no matter how many people get infected.

Surveys around the world have found that lockdowns decrease average quality of life in the order of 20-40%. That level of wellbeing reduction parallels an acute disease (see Figure 1). At least a quarter of people under quarantine have endured a horrific collapse in their mental health and quality of life. According to a CDC study, 11% of people seriously considered suicide during the lockdown, including 1 in 4 young adults. 8 large national surveys discovered a 12-fold increase in suicidal thoughts in young adults (37% vs 3%). Social distancing has made life so intolerable that death from COVID doesn’t look so bad.

By severely depressing the economy, lockdowns have pulled many people down the income ladder, for which there is a corresponding lower life expectancy on each rung. Wealthy countries with free public healthcare are no exception (see Figure 2). In January 2021, the ILO estimated that workers have so far lost $3.7 trillion in wages.

Chronic lonesomeness, the legacy of social distancing, is a potent risk factor for health. In addition to sapping emotional wellbeing, studies have shown that being lonely increases the incidence of many medical conditions and takes an average of 10 years off a person’s life. Depression is also prevalent among lockdown victims. Having had one or more depressive episodes decreases life expectancy by 12 years on average, according to a large Canadian study. More generally, poor satisfaction with life is also deadly. According to researchers at University College London, men and women in their 50s who are happy can expect to live 6 years longer than those who are generally unhappy.

With McCarthyism at an extreme since the pandemic began, a limited number of experts have spoken publicly on the myth that lockdowns are beneficial for fear of defamation. Add to that the refusal of the media to give a voice to anyone questioning lockdowns, the false claims by the media that experts unanimously support lockdowns, the removal of every account that questions lockdowns from all the major social media platforms, and the removal of any search result that questions lockdowns from search engines, and you can easily see why most people have concluded that experts are unanimous in supporting lockdowns.

In reality, the net harm of lockdowns has been voiced by many of the world’s leading scholars in applicable disciplines. A rapidly growing international coalition of over 40,000 health experts is taking action against social distancing restrictions, including esteemed scientists from Stanford, Oxford, and other leading institutions. National coalitions of health experts have published open statements against harmful restrictions, including in Israel, the UK and Belgium. The World Health Organization has repeatedly issued warnings about lockdowns and is now explicitly advising countries to avoid them. Michael Ryan, director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme recommends countries follow Sweden’s model of public education and respecting personal freedom. Furthermore, the ‘safe & effective’ vaccines being used to prevent COVID are neither safe nor effective (nor are they even vaccines). READ MORE

Politicians tell us that lockdowns are necessary to save lives. However, this is easy to disprove. All of the COVID mitigation measures are based on the assumption that it can be spread by a person who does not currently have symptoms. This is FALSE. For people under 70, COVID-19 is less fatal than the common flu. People of any age can easily protect themselves from a fatal case of COVID by supplementing vitamin D, being physically and socially active to boost immunity, and taking effective medications such as HCQ, zinc, ivermectin, or convalescent plasma.

Each coronavirus death takes only a few months or years off of life because almost all of the deaths are in elderly people with a pre-existing advanced illness. The virus is often an agent of mercy. Like pneumonia, “the old man’s friend,” it provides a peaceful and natural passing for elderly people who have very poor health or quality of life. To claim that all deaths from COVID are tragedies is to claim that everyone should be immortal.

Contrary to the media spin, lockdowns don’t even reduce contagion or save lives while they are occurring, yet alone over the long-term. Each lockdown victim is forced to endure terrible suffering and lose many wellbeing-adjusted life years. According to Canadian stats, as of April 2021, lockdowns have killed 4 times more people under age 65 than COVID.

The health problems that lockdowns create will occur in more people, cause more suffering, take more years of life away, and kill a higher proportion of people than coronavirus ever could. The most politically notable difference between COVID-19 deaths and the billions of projected lockdowns deaths is that most lockdown deaths will occur many years in the future as victims approach their lockdown-reduced life expectancy.

As illustrated in the above chart, a pandemic strategy with a long-term view of saving lives should prioritize protecting jobs, education, and quality of life. It should discourage isolating at home, which is known to cause acute depression, physical inactivity, and is believed to increase child abuse.

Shall we ignore these death rates and put our faith in future technological advances to render them obsolete?

Consider that in the United States:

Life expectancy has increased only 3 years in the last 31 years (75 years in 1989 to 78 years in 2020).

Since 2010, death rates have increased for adults 24 to 65-year-old across all races.

Median age of death for correctional officers has been found to be 12-16 years lower than the national average. Likely reasons include high levels of stress, alcohol use, and suicide.

Many health risks have always and will always affect how long we live to some degree. For instance, if national life expectancy reaches 95 years in your lifetime, the health risk factors of lockdowns (depression, stress, decreased income, etc) will likely still cause you to die sooner. By substantially raising multiple health risks, social distancing will almost certainly shorten your life irrespective of any increase in life expectancy from medical advances.
